Initial Reaction

When I first began reading "Hedda Gabler" I was really skeptical about whether or not I was going to enjoy the play.  The plot seemed to move along slowly and although it seems like Ibsen provides a lot of exciting additions and scandals none of them were exactly appealing to me.  Upon further reading, however, I'm finding that I enjoy the book more and I am beginning to become increasingly interested in Hedda's character.  In Act One she was extremely annoying to me though and it was difficult trying to sympathize with her and her situation.  Also, although there isn't much shown regarding Tesman's inner character, I find him to be a carefree man and for these reasons, I admire his persona.  His simplicity and laid-back attitude is best revealed to me in the initial description of his attire (223).  Overall I'm excited to continue reading and witness how the situations unfold.

i enjoy your honesty ms. papaya and the fact that you thought gabbler was annoying, because i was thinking the same thing, but everyone else seems to be in love with her from her first words

wow now that i actually read and understand what you are talking about i throughly agree with your analysis well done but what do you make of Aunt Tesman's character?

Well Steven, in response to your latter comment, I find Aunt Tesman to be a sociable and warm character however easily agitated with Hedda although she may not show it. In her attempt to impress Hedda with her elegant hat, Hedda blatantly disrespects Aunt Julie's effort to rise to her own standards so as not to ashame her nephew's wife. Overall I believe Aunt Julie represents a compatible character who does her best to satisfy the needs and opinions of those around her. You?

I love your analysis Maya. I too like Tesman's character. I also love that he is laid back and shows more sympathy towards others (for example Aunt Tesman) than Hedda. In the first act I definetely relate to him more than Hedda. He's not as sure of himself as she is. He also seems more honest. Overall I liked him better too. Unlike most others who enjoyed Hedda's character more to begin with.
